Purpose of Job
- The lead hand will supervise and coordinate specific production activities and supervise, lead and instruct employees within their department(s), inclusive of any shift.
- Ensure that all employees work within established regulations, policies and procedures with regards to health and safety, the environment, and quality
Principal Accountabilities
- Lead, plan, organize and control manufacturing processes in their department(s) to ensure manufacturing goals are achieved (e.g. On-Time Delivery, Continuous Flow, Scrap and Machine efficiency).
- Use the scheduling app (or any other app / production reports) to plan, coordinate, assign and oversee work orders within their departments(s).
- Analyse work orders, production schedules and other records / reports to determine production requirements and evaluate current production estimates / outputs.
- Provide leadership for problem and conflict resolution.
- Supervise Department workloads to increase efficiency.
- Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality.
- Assist with on-the-spot troubleshooting.
- Maintain a safe, clean and legally compliant workplace.
- Identify, investigate, document and implement corrective measures for potential environmental and / or safety issues.
- Use the quality app to disposition NCP generated in the department and use its reporting capability to analyse inefficiencies.
- Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality.
- Supervises staff to ensure that all employees are working safely, efficiently and diligently to meet production standards.
- Lead, direct, coach and develop/train employees on an ongoing basis.
- Supervises and directs associates in a fair and consistent manner to insure compliance with company policies, procedure and safety rules and provide appropriate feedback and /or disciplinary measures as needed.
- Sets employee expectation and accountability.
- Provide new employee orientation and introduce new employees to the co-workers and the work environment
- Approve, monitor and manage employee absences (PEL, leave of absence, vacation and overtime); complete or review and sign time sheets;
- Deals with employee concerns by conveying concerns to management.
- Participate in operations meetings to raise, identify and take corrective action for applicable production and/or quality issues.
- Review and maintain Narratives for respective areas.
- Performs miscellaneous duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Ensure that workers work in compliance with the OHSA and its regulations.
- Ensure that workers use any equipment, protective devices or clothing the company requires.
- Tell workers about any workplace health and safety hazards that they might be aware of.
- Give workers written instructions on measures and procedures to be followed for their own protection, if prescribed by regulation.
- Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect workers.
- All required PPE while in plant.
- Work safe & ergonomically by following JH&S policies.
- Enforce and promote workplace safety.
- Report any unsafe acts, conditions or accidents across the plant.
- Identifies personal safety compliance or non-compliance by observing employees' use of protective equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Education
- A High school diploma or equivalent or 5 years’ experience.
- Leadership qualities include ability to instruct and maintain effective and efficient productivity from departmental personnel.
- Ability to train staff as necessary.
- Ability to read blue prints, geometric dimensioning and tolerance interpretation as well as troubleshoot CNC programs.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, root cause analysis and problem solving skills.
- Ability to effectively handle multiple activities simultaneously and successfully function in a cross functional manufacturing environment
- Proven ability to deal with all levels of staff in a tactful and persuasive manner.
- Strong communication, planning and organising skills.
